Abstract: A ranking of selected xenobiotic substances is
performed with respect to persistence, spatial range and bio-accumulation
potential. This leads to a partial ordering of the chemicals and
to the use of Hasse diagrams, a well-established technique to
depict partially ordered sets. In order to enhance the practically
relevant linear character, the real-valued quantities of each
property is replaced by 3 discrete intervals. This results
in a more conclusive ranking without recourse to ad-hoc weighing
procedures. The study is complemented by an embedding of the partially
ordered set of xenobiotics into the corresponding combinatorial
event graph. Finally, a new type of linear ordering is presented,
with interesting properties for practical applications.
